DESERTEC means "Desert and Technology". This concept is developed by Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation (TREC-www.desertec.org) - a movement started by a group called The Club of Rome. DESERTEC envisages using deserts to erect Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants to generate utility-scale power. In India, DESERTEC concept can be applied to Thar desert in Rajasthan. Thar desert has the potential to generate enough peak solar power to power whole of south Asia. This power can be transmitted using HVDC lines with small transmission losses. DESERTEC-India is a step to create awareness about DESERTEC, CSP, HVDC and its relevance to India within media, industry, educational institutions, politicians, bureaucrats, scientists and common people.
